Hello All-

In this episode, Monster.com does it again…

I LOVE YOU,

WorkFarce

 FROM INFOWEEK:

Without the company’s permission, Monster.com was briefly recruiting new bots this week to work on behalf of cyber criminals. The company confirmed Wednesday that malicious software was inserted on the site’s Monster Company Boulevard pages, which allow job seekers to research companies, in order to surreptitiously turn visitors’ PCs into zombies for spam and malware delivery.

“It seems that company.monster.com suffered some sort of iframe injection attack [on Monday],” said Roger Thompson, CTO of Exploit Prevention Labs in a blog post, noting that the employment ads for a number of major brands were affected, including Eddie Bauer, GMAC Mortgage, BestBuy, Toyota Financial, and Tricounties Bank.

The attack relied on a technique known as iframe injection. “Iframe tags are a kind of HTML tag,” explains the StopBadware.org site. “An iframe creates a small ‘window’ on a Web page so that another Web page can load within the embedded window. Iframes are not always used for nefarious purposes; one frequent use, for example, is to embed a video into a blog post. When used by malicious hackers, an iframe can be made so small that it is invisible, and the visitor to the infected web page never knows that another page is also loading in the tiny iframe window.”

Monster.com spokesperson Kathryn Burns confirmed the compromise and said that the company promptly removed and cleaned the affected Web pages.

“The malware was designed to make computers running it part of a spamming network,” Burns said in an e-mail. “The virus is detectable by most major anti-virus software, and this issue should not affect users running Windows with the most recent security updates from Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT). In addition, we believe only an extremely small percentage of those using the site this week were potentially exposed prior to those pages being cleaned. Because we believe this malware originated with an online crime group that targets leading web properties, we are providing as much information as possible about this situation to the appropriate law enforcement officials.”

This marks the second significant attack on Monster.com in recent months. In August, Symantec (NSDQ: SYMC) reported a new Trojan, called Infostealer.Monstres, which tries to capture personal information from Monster.com job seeker profiles using credentials that appear to have been stolen from legitimate recruiters. The stolen information is subsequently used to tailor phishing e-mails which, if opened and unwittingly triggered, can encrypt files on a victim’s PC. Cyber criminals can then demand payment to restore the locked files.

Burns stressed that Monster.com remains committed to the integrity of its products and services and to the protection of its online visitors.

Lowe’s and the Holiday Madness…The War on Christmas…

November 15, 2007 · 4 Comments

Lowe’s & The American Family Association
Sure’nuff-

I’ve been coming across many examples of the Holiday season becoming WAY too un-offending…most recently there was an example locally, here in the MidWest States where a large shopping mall owner/property group instructed their on-property “santas” to stop saying, “HO HO HO…Merry Christmas” and begin saying, “HA HA HA…Happy Holidays!”…WTF…this is madness.

A dradel has become described as a “festive spinning holiday toy” in the local catalogs….

Indeed…The annual asshole parade that is “The War on Christmas” has begun early this year as Lowe’s, the national home improvement chain, sent out their “holiday catalog” with a two-page spread advertising “family trees”, previously known as Christmas trees.

This of course enraged a group of Mississippi redneck Jesus crusaders who call themselves The American Family Association. Luckily for Jesus, the AFA clears their calendar of f*ggot and n*gger hating this time of year to focus their full energy on protecting Christmas. If there was ever a war in which I hoped for mutually assured destruction, it would be “The War on Christmas.”…both sides would lose …ESPECIALLY the group from the American Family Association….

Lowe’s dutifully played the part of greedy, soulless corporation by claiming the whole thing was just a mistake.

That might have sounded sincere if the headline read “X-mas trees” or “Product Name Here,” but I do a lot of typing and never have I mistakenly typed “intercourse” when I meant to type “fuck.” Admittedly, big companies are in a no-win situation because no matter what they call a Christmas tree (or any other barely-religious symbol), someone is going to be offended–never mind that it is, in fact, a freakin Christmas tree.

Nevertheless, they still decide to be “politically correct” by using a pan-religious term…because they’re freakin sissies…

On the other side, the people who bitch about dumb shit like this, be they the “persecuted Christians” or the “marginalized minorities” may be better served focus on real issues rather than the product descriptions in an intercoursing catalog….like “what is toothpaste?” and “Your sister cannot be your girlfriend.”

I LOVE YOU,

WorkFarce

Northeastern University and a start-up company cofounded by an associate professor have filed a patent-infringement suit against Google Inc., claiming that database technology patented in 1997 was misappropriated by the world’s most popular Internet search service.

“This particular patent has to do with the fundamental database architecture, which they use to serve up every single result they serve to you,” said Michael Belanger, president of Jarg Corp. in Waltham. Jarg is a privately funded developer of advanced search technology. The company was cofounded by Northeastern associate professor Kenneth P. Baclawski and holds an exclusive license to the patent, which is owned by Northeastern.

The patent covers a method for chopping up database queries into multiple portions and having each part processed by a different computer. This allows for much faster searching of huge databases, like Google’s vast index of Web pages on the Internet.

Though Google was incorporated in 1998, Belanger said he and Baclawski had no idea the company might be infringing the patent, until about 2 1/2 years ago. That’s when a representative of a Boston-area law firm, which Belanger declined to name, told him of seeing a presentation by Google that described the company’s Web search technology. The database search technique described in the presentation resembled Northeastern’s patented technology, the law firm told Belanger.

“When a law firm tells us that it’s very likely that the Google architecture is the fundamental architecture on which our company is founded, we have a fiduciary responsibility to our investors to do something,” Belanger said. He did further research and became convinced Google was using the patented technology. But the law firm that provided the original tip refused to take the case unless it was paid in advance, and Jarg couldn’t afford the fees.

“We are aware of the complaint and believe it to be without merit based upon our initial investigation,” said Google spokesman Jon Murchinson. Northeastern University declined to comment.

Belanger said it took him 2 1/2 years to find lawyers who would take the case on a contingency basis – meaning they only get paid if they win. On Tuesday, those lawyers filed suit against Google in US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas in Marshall, a venue that specializes in patent cases.

According to the research firm LegalMetric, patent plaintiffs who sue in Marshall win 78 percent of the time. In addition, said Jay Sandvos, partner at Bromberg & Sunstein, an intellectual property law firm in Boston, the Texas court tends to issue higher-than-average financial awards to victorious plaintiffs. “If you’re going to take on a contingency case, you want to feel you’re going to get a big payoff,” said Sandvos. “The Eastern District of Texas tends to be friendly that way.”

But Sandvos said that while some frivolous patent suits are filed in Marshall, many serious litigants favor the Texas court as well, thanks to its vast experience in handling such cases. “Because they have so much patent litigation, they have a certain expertise,” Sandvos said.

Belanger said he has no interest in shutting down Google. “We expect them to be generous enough to pay a normal royalty” if Northeastern and Jarg win the case. Northeastern will get half of whatever money is left after the lawyers are paid and other expenses are covered.

But any such outcome is a long way off. Sandvos predicted it will be one to two years before the case goes to trial.

Old Friends and New Problems…

November 12, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Yep-

Most of my friends, family and readers know that I have been an avid follower of my Father’s good friend, Dr. Richard Florida. www.creativeclass.org ) for quite some time….my co-workeers used to laugh at me for driving to his lectures, reading his books and, then, meeting him for beers on his way throgh the Midwest.  He knows what I do…He LOVES internet recruiting because it hits STRAIGHT at the heart of what he is trying to convey…get jobs, through innovation….however, his AUDIENCE has morphed into government types…State Workforce directors, Economic Developers and Politicians

He’s written some pretty amazing books on Talent which have gone largely overlooked by the Recruiting community…which tells me a couple of things.

1. Recruitment and Talent Aquisition professionals do not think in the MACRO sense…

2. Companies, in particular, and those recruiters who are working/contracted by, large global companies, have their head in the sand and are not doing enough to help stem the “War For Talent”.

My Father who worked in economic and workforce development in the midwest for years, turned me on to Dr. Florida a few years ago…told me, “This guy will be hated because he’s a “Rock-Star Professor” but his ideas on Job Development are sound and actionable”…

My Dad was right…he was fired from Carnagie Mellon and is now at George Mason after writing his books….but guess what?

He has prevailed…the US turned its back and put its head in the sand…now the GLOBAL economic and industrial and TALENT/JOBS development markets are tuning IN to him and embracing his ideas….

Maybe…just maybe…he maybe right…

Below is a recent Video from Dr. Rich on Charlie Rose…

At BlueCollarCrossing.com, viewers can not only peruse the thousands of blue-collar jobs posted on our dynamic job-board site, but they can also keep up-to-date on the latest trends and news in both the blue-collar industry and the job market in general.

Pasadena, CA — (SBWIRE) — 11/08/2007 — With the arrival of Daily Job Market News, finding out about the current job market just became worlds easier. Every day, a new brief will be posted covering hot topics such as why the housing slump effects job growth, what are the top 100 companies to work for, and which are the best cities to find jobs in. A daily dose of job market news is all viewers need to guide them towards the right job at the right time.

“The new Daily Job Market News articles not only keep readers informed about the ever changing job market, but also help them know where to look and when to look,” said CEO A. Harrison Barnes. “What’s important is that our viewers are finding the information they need to find the jobs they are passionate about.”

Not only can viewers find a link to the Daily Job Market News on BlueCollarCrossing, but they can also read every article, past and present, on EmploymentCrossing.com, the main hub for a growing family of industry-specific job-search sites that was launched on April 9, 2007.

This rapidly expanding site focuses exclusively on providing the most extensive range of available jobs from every corner of each sector and, as of today, has posted close to four hundred thousand jobs!

“The mission of EmploymentCrossing is simple: to gather and share with the world all current and active job listings. How have we begun to accomplish this crucial mission? By dividing and conquering. We have targeted more than 25 key industries and set out to master each job market by mining and posting all relevant jobs from employer career webpages, newspapers, job boards, and other online resources. In addition, we do not charge employers to post jobs, a unique approach that encourages ever more job diversity on our sites,” says its website.

The inspiration behind it all comes from the development and success of LawCrossing (www.lawcrossing.com), which features the largest collection of active legal jobs in the world, including more than 10,000 positions at top law firms, corporations, public interest organizations, and government offices throughout the U.S.

Since its launch in July 2003, LawCrossing has become the world’s largest legal-career-placement website. The website is another brainchild of Barnes, who also founded the hugely successful parent company of the Crossing employment sites, Juriscape, in 2000.

ABOUT JURISCAPE
Established in 2000, Juriscape has been helping job seekers find employment for more than seven years. Today, Juriscape has grown into an international, multimillion-dollar affiliation of more than 15 profitable companies and 500 enthusiastic employees.
